I’m thrilled to invite you on a transformative journey through the Tanakh – the Hebrew Bible. Beginning in August 2025, our community will embark on a three-and-a-half-year exploration of all 929 chapters of the Tanakh, inspired by the acclaimed 929 Project. You will be able to find the link to the 929 website on our app.

We’ll read one chapter each day, Sunday through Thursday, leaving Fridays and Saturdays open for reflection. Every Shabbat morning at 9:30am, we’ll gather during Torah Study to discuss insights and questions that arise from the week’s readings. Our journey begins on Shabbat morning, August 23, 2025. Come prepared with thoughts on the first five chapters of Genesis – or simply come ready to listen, learn, and share.

This project is not about the achievement of finishing the Tanakh cover to cover. Rather, it is rooted in two deeper goals:

First, like the original 929 Project, this initiative aims to bring people together across backgrounds and beliefs. In a time of increasing division, my hope is that this shared journey will foster meaningful conversation and connection within our community.

Second, I want us to contribute to the ongoing conversation of Jewish learning by creating our own commentary. I invite each of you to respond to the text in your own unique way. You might jot reflections in the margins of a new Tanakh, write poems inspired by the chapters, or create art for each book. By the end of these three years, I envision an exhibit and collection of our community’s reflections—a Beth Or commentary on the Tanakh.

I look forward to traveling this path with you. If you’d like to help bring this project to life, please reach out to me.

-Rabbi Jason Bonder

Ten years ago, I retired from a career in engineering project management. I entered this "free agent" phase of life and found poetry (or poetry found me), launching an improbable and deeply satisfying new beginning. One of my early attempts at creative writing was inspired by the Creation story. Our Beginning 929 study last week gave me the impetus to look back and language to refine that work.

So, I share my poem with you. Enjoy reading and Shabbat Shalom!

See you next time at Beth Or,

Steve Pollack

A Psalm of Gratitude

You said, y’hi or, “Let there be Light…”

And so, separated day from night

A void unformed, fashioned for dreams and sight

Waters below, You…
